PSU Men’s Basketball defeated by Tufts

PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Tufts University used a high-scoring offense and a stingy defense Tuesday night to defeat Plymouth State University, 86-64, in a non-conference men's basketball game at Foley Gymnasium.

Junior Jon Pierce (Belmont, Mass.) and senior Jeremy Black (Jamesville, N.Y.) each scored 17 points to lead the Jumbos, but it was the Tufts defense that did in the Panthers.  Tufts held the Panthers to a sub-40 percent shooting night, limiting the Panthers to a season-low 64 points, more than 20 points below their average.

Pierce also collected a game-high 12 rebounds, helping the Jumbos to a 50-32 advantage on the boards.  Junior Aaron Gallant (Bangor, Maine) also contributed to the win with 12 points.

Senior Chris Wilkinson (Newmarket, N.H.) led the Panthers, scoring 17 points and grabbing eight rebounds.  Sophomore Mike Chergey (Bow, N.H.) was the only other Panther to reach double figures in scoring with 13 points off the bench.  Junior Ben Huntington (Hampstead, N.H./Pinkerton), the team's leading scorer who is averaging over 20 points per game, was held to just seven points.

Pierce and Black both hit three-pointers early in the game as the Jumbos opened the contest with a 12-2 lead.  Tufts slowly pulled away in the first half, leading by as many as 20 points (36-16) before settling for an 18-point margin at the break (46-28).  The Panthers got no closer than 16 points in the second half as the Jumbos coasted home with the win.

Tufts connected on 59 percent from three-point range (13-of-22) while PSU was cold from beyond the arc, converting just 1-of-12.

PSU, 3-6 overall, wraps up the first semester of action this Saturday with a non-conference match-up at Johnson & Wales University (3:00 p.m.)  Tufts, which won its fifth straight to improve to 6-2 overall, is done for the semester and will return to the court on Jan. 5-6, 2008, at the Wilkes-Barre Challenge at Wilkes-Barre, Pa.
