PSU Basketball and Ice Hockey players named to Weekly Honor Roll

PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Two Plymouth State University student-athletes were recognized with weekly conference honors Monday after turning in strong performances last week, leading their respective teams to a 1-1 record.

Junior Ben Huntington (Hampstead, N.H./Pinkerton) was named to the Little East Conference Men's Basketball Honor Roll, and senior Karl Helgesson (Lerum, Sweden) was selected to the ECAC Northeast Men's Ice Hockey Conference Honor Roll.  It is the second weekly honor received this season by Huntington, and the first of the season for Helgesson.

A 5'11" guard, Huntington (right) averaged 22.5 points and 4.0 assists in PSU's 1-1 week.  His 27 points in Thursday's 101-69 win over Lyndon State matched his season-high, and he added 18 points in a 90-84 loss Saturday at Rhode Island College.  Huntington shot over 50 percent in both games, connecting on 16-of-27 field goal attempts for the week while draining all eight free throw tries.

Huntington is one of the top players in the LEC.  He ranks second in the conference in scoring (16.9 points per game), 11th in assists (2.6 per game) and steals (1.2 per game), and 19th in rebounding (4.3 per game).  A strong shooter, he also leads the LEC in free throw percentage (93.3) and ranks 10th in three-point field goal percentage (40.2).

A 6'1", 180-pound goalie, Helgesson (left) recorded a 2.00 goals against average and a .937 saves percentage in PSU's 1-1 week.  He made 30 saves on 33 shots Wednesday in PSU's 4-2 loss to league-leading Curry (the Colonels scored an empty-net goal), and he made 29 saves on 30 shots Saturday in a key win over Johnson & Wales.

A former First Team All-ECAC Northeast goalie, Helgesson ranks seventh in the conference in goals against average (2.99) and sixth in saves percentage (.912).

The Panther men's basketball team plays its final two home games this week, Tuesday against rival Keene State (7:30 p.m.) and Saturday vs. UMass Boston on Senior Day (3:00 p.m.)  The men's hockey team plays a pair of road games this week, Wednesday at Suffolk University (7:00 p.m.) and Saturday at Fitchburg State College (3:00 p.m.)
