LYNDONVILLE, Vt. - Senior classmate Kali Stoddard-Imari (Danville, Vt.) scored a game-high 19 points and senior Brad Durr (Windham, Conn.) added 13 points and a game-high 12 rebounds Thursday evening as Lyndon State College knocked off Plymouth State University, 59-55, in non-conference men's basketball action at Stannard Gymnasium.
Junior Jason O'Keefe (Everett, Mass.) scored a team-high 16 points to lead the Panthers, while classmate Mike Chergey (Bow, N.H.) added 12 points and Bryan Tracy (Manchester, N.H./Central) chipped in with 10. PSU, which shot 30 percent from the field in the first half and 28 percent in the second half, lost for the third time in its last four outings to fall to 3-5.
Senior Cesar Martinez (East Harlem, N.Y.) was also a double-figure scorer for Lyndon State with 13 points, along with six assists and five steals, as the Hornets stopped a two-game losing skid and improved to 2-3.
It was a close game throughout the first half, with six lead changes, neither team leading by more than five points, and the home team clinging to a three-point margin at the break, 27-24. PSU took a slight lead early in the second half, but it was tied 39-all at the midway point. After a pair of Panther free throws, the Hornets held Plymouth State scoreless for nearly five minutes, scoring 10 unanswered points to take the largest lead of the night, 49-41, with just over five minutes remaining.
PSU responded with a 10-2 run to tie the game at 51-51 with two minutes to play. But this was Lyndon State's night, and Stoddard-Imari scored six of his 19 points down the stretch, including four at the free throw line, as the Hornets held on for the win.
The Panthers return home to host Western Connecticut State University on Saturday in a Little East Conference encounter at Foley Gymnasium (3:00 p.m.), while Lyndon State hosts New England College Saturday at 4:00 p.m.
