Four PSU Basketball players earn All-State honors

            PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Four members of the Plymouth State University basketball teams have been recognized as members of the All-State Team for the 2008-09 season, as voted by the Division III head coaches in New Hampshire.

            The Panther women headline the list, with three student-athletes earning accolades, while one member of the PSU men's squad was honored.  Sophomore Amanda Kania (Manchester, N.H./West) was named to the Women's All-State First Team, junior Laura Kent (Bellingham, Mass.) was voted to the Second Team, and freshman Alicia Doucet (Manchester, N.H./Central) was selected N.H. Women's Rookie of the Year.  Senior Ben Huntington (Hampstead, N.H./Pinkerton Academy) represented the Panther men as an All-State Second Team choice.

            A 5'11" forward, Kania (near right) was a Second Team All-Little East Conference selection this year after averaging 12.9 points and 6.6 rebounds.  A 6'0" forward, Kent (right, middle) was also one of the top post players in the conference this season, averaging 11.8 points and 5.9 boards per contest, while Doucet (far right), a 5'11" forward, made a strong impact as a newcomer, averaging 10 points and 5.3 rebounds in her rookie campaign.  The three led PSU to a 16-11 overall record, a five-game improvement over last season, and its first post-season berth since 2003.

             A 5'11" guard, Huntington (left) was one of the top shooters in the Little East this season.  He finished eighth in the conference in scoring (13.2 points per game) and seventh in three-point field goal percentage (35.4).  Huntington also set a school record for free-throw percentage in a season (.924), leading the LEC and finishing third in the nation in that category and making 38 in a row at one point. He helped PSU to a 12-14 overall record this winter, a four-game improvement over last season.

            The All-State teams include student-athletes from the six Division III schools in New Hampshire, Plymouth State and Keene State College from the Little East Conference, Colby-Sawyer College and New England College from the Commonwealth Coast Conference, Rivier College of the Great Northeast Athletic Conference, and Daniel Webster College of the New England Collegiate Conference.
