PLYMOUTH, N.H. - The Plymouth State University men's basketball team will make its first post-season appearance in four years this week after receiving a bid to the 2010 Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III New England Tournament.
The Panthers, 16-10 overall, earned the third seed in this year's tournament and will host sixth-seeded Husson College, 15-11, in a first-round game this Wednesday, Mar. 3, at 7:30 p.m. at Foley Gymnasium. PSU returns to the post-season for the first time since making five straight appearances from 2002-06, and participating nine times in 11 years from 1996-2006.
The other first-round games Wednesday include top-seeded Eastern Connecticut State University (18-9) hosting eighth-seeded Wentworth (15-11); second-seeded Elms College (21-6) hosting seventh-seeded Curry College (15-13); and fourth-seeded Becker (18-9) hosting fifth-seeded Framingham State College (16-10).
Wednesday's quarterfinal winners will advance to Saturday's semifinal round, with the highest remaining seed hosting both semifinal games as well as Sunday's championship contest. Fourth-seeded Becker College knocked off Framingham State, Lasell College and Rivier College to capture last year's championship.
Plymouth State, led by 10th-year head coach John Scheinman, earned its ECAC berth after posting a 16-10 record overall and placing fifth in the Little East Conference with an 8-6 mark. The Panthers were defeated in the LEC Tournament's opening round by UMass Dartmouth, 77-67.
Husson earned its berth in the ECAC Tourney after registering a 15-11 record, including a 9-5 mark in the North Atlantic Conference. The Eagles were eliminated from the NAC Tournament in the opening round by Green Mountain College, 72-68. Husson advanced to the ECAC Tournament semifinals in 2008 and participated in the NCAA Tournament last year, falling to WPI in the first round, 86-57.
PSU is making its 11th appearance in the ECAC Tournament, looking for its first championship. The previous showings came in 1989, 1991, 1994, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2002, 2003, 2005 and 2006. The Panthers advanced to the ECAC championship game in 1994, 1999 and 2002. Plymouth State also participated in the NCAA Tournament in 1996 and 2004.
