PSU Men’s Hoop falls short in RPI Tip-Off Tourney
Panthers defeated by Paul Smith’s College
TROY, N.Y. – Kashean Alston (Brooklyn, NY) and Devon Carr (Queens, NY) each scored 18 points Friday evening to lead Paul Smith’s College to a 65-59 victory over Plymouth State University in the opening game of the ECAV Tip-Off Tournament on the campus of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI).
The Bobcats advance to the championship game on Saturday at 4pm against either the host Engineers or Lyndon State. Paul Smith’s improves to 4-5, while the Panthers, who will play in Saturday’s third place game (2:00 pm), fall to 1-1.
The game was tight throughout as the score was tied on five different occasions and neither team held a lead of more than five points until the final buzzer. Carr and Chris Fernandez (New York, NY) – both freshmen guards – each made two late free throws to help hold off the Panthers and Alston laid the ball in as the clock expired for the final margin.
In addition to his 18 points, Alston, a sophomore, also had a game-high 13 rebounds with two assists in 32 minutes. Carr added eight rebounds (all defensive) with an assist and a steal in a game-high 37 minutes. Fernandez finished with 12 points and three rebounds off the bench for the Bobcats, who shot 40.3% (25 for 62) from the floor, including an even 50% (12 for 24) in the second half.
For Plymouth State, which was held to 28.4% (19 for 67) shooting in the game, senior forward Tom Dowd (Portsmouth, N.H.) recorded a double-double of 14 points and 11 rebounds. Bill Stowell (Stratham, N.H./Exeter) added 12 points and nine rebounds.
