Panthers drop home game to LEC leaders

PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Junior DaQuan Brooks (Atlanta, Ga.) scored a game-high 20 points Saturday afternoon to lead Western Connecticut State University to an 87-69 victory over Plymouth State University in a Little East Conference men's basketball game at Foley Gymnasium.

The Colonials, ranked 14th in the latest national poll, remained atop the LEC standings after improving to 19-2 overall and 9-1 in conference games.  PSU fell to 9-11 and 3-7.

Brooks was one of four Colonials to score in double figures, as senior Wilburt Jarrett added 14 points, freshman Russell Payton chipped in with 13, and junior Gary Robinson contributed 12.  WestConn shot 50 percent on the afternoon (35-of-70) while holding PSU to a 42.2 percent shooting clip.

Plymouth State got 14 points and nine rebounds from senior Ryan Lambert, while freshman Alex Burt added 12 points.

WestConn held the lead most of the first half.  The Colonials were up by one point at the midway point, 16-15, but went on a 19-6 run over the next six minutes to take a 35-21 advantage.  PSU scored the last seven points of the half to cut the margin to six, 41-35.

The visitors maintained the lead in the second half, but the upset-minded Panthers kept the margin in single digits the first 10 minutes.  WestConn slowly pulled away over the final 10 minutes, keeping a double-digit advantage the rest of the way.

Both teams play LEC contests again on Tuesday, PSU visiting the University of Southern Maine and Western Conn. hosting Rhode Island College.
