Skevas lead PSU Men’s Basketball past Elms

Panthers win consolation game; home opener Tuesday

AMHERST, Mass. – Sophomore guard Petey Skevas recorded a double-double with career-highs of 24 points and 11 rebounds Saturday afternoon to lead the Plymouth State University men's basketball team to an 82-74 victory over Elms College in the consolation game of the Ken Wright Memorial Invitational, hosted by Amherst College.

Skevas converted 5-of-10 shots from the field and 14-of-15 from the free throw line, and added six assists to his repertoire.  Skevas, who also had a team-high 15 points in Friday's opening round loss to #4 Amherst, was PSU's representative on the All-Tournament Team.

Three other Panthers also reached double figures in scoring – junior Stephan Roberts with 14 points, senior Jesse Sabolis with 13, and sophomore Mark MacGregor with 10.

Sophomore Andre French led all scorers with 25 points for Elms, including four three-point baskets.  Daniel Gonzalez added 13 points for the Blazers, who have won three straight New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) championships.

Plymouth State went on a 14-2 scoring burst midway through the first half to turn a tie game into a 28-16 Panther lead.  Elms cut the margin to six points with two minutes to play but PSU scored the final seven points of the half to take a 35-22 lead at the intermission.

The Panthers maintained the double digit lead almost the entire second half.  The margin reached 20 points (55-35) with 11:41 on the clock.  Elms put up a strong effort, going on a rally and pulling to within four points (65-61) with just under four minutes to play.  An 8-1 Panther surge got the lead back up to 11 with under two minutes left and PSU held on for the win.

PSU returns to Plymouth for the home opener at Foley Gymnasium this Tuesday against Castleton State College (7:30 p.m.)
