PSU Men’s Hoop runs past Lyndon State

Chergey tops Panthers with double-double

PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Senior Brian Chergey recorded a double-double off the bench Thursday evening, scoring 19 points and grabbing 11 rebounds as Plymouth State University defeated Lyndon State College, 86-55, in non-conference men's basketball action at Foley Gymnasium.

Chergey converted 8-of-13 shot attempts, including 3-of-6 shots from long range.  He was one of five Panthers to score in double figures as PSU won it's second in a row and evened its record at 4-4 overall.  The Hornets put up a strong battle but remain winless on the season (0-8).

Junior Matt Cloutier and freshman Shomari Morgan finished with 12 points for the winners, while senior Jesse Sabolis and sophomore Mark MacGregor contributed 10 points and seven rebounds apiece. Sophomore guard Petey Skevas added five points and a career-best 10 assists.

The Hornets got a game-high 20 points and a team-leading eight rebounds from junior Jason Gray, and 14 points and seven boards from senior Ben Sackett.

There were three lead changes in the first half and neither team led by more than four points for the first 16 minutes.  Leading by one point, PSU outscored LSC 11-0 over the final four minutes of the half to take a 36-25 margin into the break.

The Panthers got the lead up to 14 points twice in the early-going of the second half before upset-minded Lyndon State rallied.  The Hornets rattled off 10 unanswered points to cut the margin to four (45-41) with 13 minutes to play.  That was as close as LSC would come, as PSU went on a 17-3 burst over the next five minutes to open up an 18-point margin (64-46) with seven minutes remaining.

PSU shot 52 percent from the field for the game while holding LSC to a 30 percent shooting clip.  The hosts enjoyed a 46-34 margin on the boards.

The Panthers wrap up the semester Saturday when they head to UMass Dartmouth for a Little East Conference match-up.  Lyndon State heads to Johnson State on Saturday to face the Badgers.
