Eastern Conn. defeats PSU Men’s Basketball
Chergey tops Panthers with 19 points
PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Eastern Connecticut State University placed four players in double figures Saturday afternoon en route to a 76-62 win over Plymouth State University in Little East Conference men's basketball action at Foley Gymnasium.
Senior Hamilton Levy scored a game-high 23 points to lead ECSU to its eighth consecutive victory, as the Warriors improve to 9-1 overall and 3-0 in the LEC. Plymouth State, which has dropped three straight, falls to 4-7 and 0-3.
Junior Joe Ives added 12 points while senior Nick Nedwick and junior Chris Robitaille 10 each as the Warriors led from wire to wire. ESCU slowly built its lead to double-digits in the first half, earning a 23-13 advantage following a three-pointer by Nedwick. The visitors extended the lead to as many as 15 in the first session, before settling on a 32-22 edge into the break.
PSU fought to cut the deficit several times in the second half, closing the gap to within eight, 59-51 with just under five minutes to play on a drive to the basket by senior Kyle Walker. Eastern Conn rebuilt its lead, though, outscoring the Panthers 16-11 down the stretch. The Warriors went 10-12 from the charity stripe in the final three minutes.
ESCU shot well from the floor, hitting on 26 of 43 shots (60.5-percent) and the Warriors out-rebounded the home team 29-26.
Both teams are back in action on Tuesday with PSU hitting the road to face UMass Boston while ECSU travels to UMass Dartmouth.
