UMass Boston nips PSU Men’s Basketball

Chergey leads all scorers with 19 points

BOSTON, Mass. – The University of Massachusetts Boston scored the final nine points of the game Tuesday evening to pull out a 57-52 victory over Plymouth State University in a Little East Conference men's basketball game in the Clark Athletic Center.

Down by four with less than two minutes to play, freshman Quadry Allen scored five straight points to give UMB at 53-52 lead.  Mike Caceres delivered on a lay-up and a free throw, and Carl Joseph sealed the win at the line.

The game was just a three-point contest most of the second half and was decided in the final minutes.  Following a Petey Skevas jumper that tied it at 39-39, the next two minutes of play would be a see-saw exchange between the two squads.  Allen gave the Beacons their largest lead up until the final two minutes when he nailed a deep 3-pointer right in front of his bench.  That lead would last just seconds as PSU got a 3-pointer from Brian Chergey.  Chergey, along with Skevas gave the Panthers a late push and helped them to take a 52-48 lead.

The Beacons set-up Allen again for a 3-pointer which he delivered on after two missed attempts.  Allen made a pair of free throws for UMB with 1:32 left on the clock which gave the Beacons the lead for good. Caceres added another basket and Caceres and Joseph each went 1-for-2 at the line down the stretch.

Caceres finished with 13 points and a game-high nine rebounds to lead the Beacons.  Allen, who did not play in the first half scored all 10 of his points in the second half.  Joseph finished with nine points in the contest, and led the defense along with Kadeem Coulter with a combined six of the team's nine blocks respectively.

Chergey wound up with a game-best 19 points, while Kyle Walker came off the bench to finish with 10 points.  Skevas filled up the stat sheet for the Panthers with eight points, seven boards, six assists, two steals, and one block.

UMB returns to action on Thursday when they travel to Bridgewater State University for a 5:30 p.m. non-conference game.  Plymouth State will host Western Connecticut State University on Saturday in a Little East Conference match-up at 3 p.m.
