PSU Men’s Hoop falls to UMass Dartmouth
Skevas continues solid play for Panthers
PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Senior twin towers Lance Greene and Justin Pulver each posted double-doubles Saturday afternoon as the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth defeated Plymouth State University, 65-47, in a Little East Conference men's basketball game at Foley Gym.
The 6'7" Greene scored a game-high 16 points and pulled down 10 rebounds, while the 6'8" Pulver scored 10 and grabbed a game-high 12 boards. Greene also recorded three assists, three blocked shots and three steals as the Corsairs moved to 10-9 overall and 4-5 in the Little East. Freshman Jake Laga also chipped in with 11 points off the bench and senior Paul Rose added 10 points and seven assists.
PSU was led by sophomore Petey Skevas, who scored 11 points and collected a team-high six rebounds. Sophomore Sheldon Benson was the next high scorer with seven points for the Panthers, who dropped to 6-11 overall and 2-7 in conference play.
The Corsairs raced out to a double-digit lead (19-8) in the first eight minutes of the game. UMD got the margin as high as 14 points (30-16) with four-and-a-half minutes to play in the half, but PSU answered with seven straight points to whittle it down to seven (30-23) with 1:40 on the clock. Greene and Pulver hit buckets in the final minute to put UMD up 34-23 at the half.
Skevas scored the first two points for PSU to start the second frame, but UMD answered with seven straight on a pair of hoops by Green, including a traditional three-point play, and a basket by Pulver. That got the margin up to 16, and the Corsairs maintained the double-digit advantage the rest of the way.
Both teams play non-conference road games in their next outing on Tuesday as PSU travels to Lesley University and UMass Dartmouth visits Tufts University.
