Tufts spoils PSU Men’s Basketball’s home opener

Hot shooting lifts Jumbos past Panthers

PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Senior Scott Anderson (Sudbury, Mass.) scored a game-high 20 points and handed out a team-high six assists Tuesday evening to lead Tufts University to a 79-63 victory over Plymouth State University in a non-conference men's basketball game at Foley Gymnasium.

The Jumbos (4-5), who stopped a three-game skid, led wire to wire but didn't put the pesky Panthers away until the last nine minutes of the game.  Tufts used a 9-1 run midway through the first half to open up a double-digit lead, 26-16, with 7:30 remaining.  PSU (1-6) was within five points, 30-25, with three and a half minutes to play, but Tufts closed out the first half with seven unanswered points to take a 37-25 margin into the locker room.

After the visitors pushed the margin up to 16 points (41-25) in the first minute of the second half, PSU came alive and went on a 19-6 burst over the next five minutes, pulling to within three points (47-44) with 13:50 on the clock.  The Jumbos pulled it together and went on a 14-4 run of their own to push the margin back up to 13 points with eight minutes to play, and then maintained the double-digit margin the rest of the way.

The hot-shooting Jumbos converted more than 53 percent from the field (24-of-45) and 82 percent from the free throw line (23-of-28).  Anderson made 6-of-10 shots from the field and 7-of-8 from the free throw line, and he got ample support from freshman Stephen Haladyna (Hamilton, Mass.), who tossed in 16 points off the Jumbos bench, converting 5-of-6 from the floor and a perfect 4-of-4 from the line.

Sophomore C.J. Moss (Westport, Mass.) also chipped in with 10 points for the Jumbos, while freshman Tom Palleschi (Haverhill, Mass.) contributed six points, seven rebounds, four assists and three blocked shots.

Sophomore Alex Burt (Dover, N.H.) led the home team with 13 points, while junior Mark MacGregor (Rochester, N.H./Spaulding) added 11 points and five boards.  Junior Petey Skevas (Wethersfield, Conn.) and senior Kevin Eisenberg (Moultonborough, N.H.) finished with nine points apiece, with Skevas contributing a team-high seven assists.

PSU returns to Little East Conference action Saturday with a 3:00 p.m. tip-off at Foley Gym against the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth.  Tufts returns home to host Lesley University Friday in a non-conference affair (7:00 p.m.)
