Burt, Skevas lead Panthers past Rams
PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Sophomore Alex Burt (Dover, N.H.) and junior Petey Skevas (Wethersfield, Conn.) combined for 44 points Thursday evening as Plymouth State University defeated Suffolk University, 82-56, in non-conference men's basketball action at Foley Gymnasium.
Burt tossed in a game-high 24 points, converting 10-of-16 shots from the field and 4-of-6 from three-point range, while Skevas contributed 20 points, a season-high 10 assists, five rebounds and four steals. Senior Kevin Eisenberg (Moultonborough, N.H.) and junior Mark MacGregor (Rochester, N.H./Spaulding) added 10 points apiece as PSU stopped a four-game losing skid and improved to 3-10.
Senior Chris Torres (Brockton, Mass.) topped the visitors with 13 points while classmate Colin Halpin (Melrose, Mass.) chipped in with 11 as the Rams fell to 4-7.
It was a close game most of the first half, as neither team led by more than five points in the first 10 minutes. PSU started to pull away late in the half and took a 10-point margin (37-27) into the break, thanks to 15 points from Burt and 11 from Skevas.
The Panthers opened the second half with an 11-4 burst to push the margin up to 17 points (48-31). The Rams cut the deficit down to 12, but PSU answered with a 15-5 run to get the lead back up to 22 points, and the Panthers coasted the rest of the way.
PSU returns to Little East Conference action on Saturday with a visit to Western Connecticut State University. Suffolk is back in action Saturday with a Great Northeast Athletic Conference match-up at Lasell.
