PSU Men’s Basketball takes down Rivier
Arsenault leads Panthers with 22 points
CONCORD, N.H. – Freshman Curtis Arsenault (Berlin, N.H./Phillips Exeter) scored a game-high 22 points Tuesday evening to lead the Plymouth State University men's basketball team to a 73-61 victory over Rivier College in the Boys & Girls Club Classic, hosted by New Hampshire Technical Institute.
Arsenault made 8-of-12 shots from the field and 6-of-7 from the free throw line to lead the way. Senior Petey Skevas (Wetherfield, Conn.) added 11 points, seven assists and five rebounds and junior Alex Burt (Dover, N.H.) added 10 points as the Panthers improved to 2-1 on the season.
Senior Nick Walch (Dedham, Mass.) led the Raiders (0-2) with 14 points on the night as he shot 5-for-9 from the field. Walch also led the team with four rebounds. Senior Tom Poitras (Bow, N.H.) and junior Jake Nelson (Nashua, N.H.) added 12 points apiece.
PSU led the entire game, but Rivier kept the margin in single digits in the first half. The Panthers got the lead up to eight points twice in the opening 20 minutes, and went into the locker room with a six-point margin, 34-28. Arsenault led PSU with eight points at the break.
Rivier cut the deficit to two points early in the second half, and was within three points, 45-42, with 13 minutes to play.PSU went on a 14-6 run to open up its first double-digit lead, 59-48, with eight minutes remaining. Skevas scored six points in the burst and sophomore Logan Kesty (New Boston, N.H./Bishop Guertin) added four. The Raiders got no closer than eight points the rest of the way as PSU maintained a double-digit margin the last six minutes of the game.
PSU will be back on the court on Saturday with the home opener at Foley Gym against Lyndon State College (3:00 p.m.) Rivier will look to find its winning ways this weekend as it hosts the 20th installment of the Rivier Tip-Off Tournament.
