Panthers make solid upset bid against Polar Bears
BRUNSWICK, Maine – The Bowdoin College men's basketball team used a late run to pull away from Plymouth State University, 58-49, on Tuesday evening at Morrell Gymnasium.
The 18th-ranked Polar Bears held the Panthers to just 16 points in the second half and improved to 18-2 with the victory. Plymouth State drops to 10-10 with the loss.
Bowdoin had three players in double figures, led by 12 points each from Keegan Pieri and Lucas Hausman. John Swords added 11 points, seven rebounds and three blocks while Grant White dished out a career-high eight assists in the win.
Plymouth State was led by a game-high 15 points from junior Alex Burt (Dover, N.H.), who finished 6-9 from the field and 3-5 from three-point range. Freshman Logan Kesty (New Boston, N.H.) pitched in nine points off the bench for the Panthers.
PSU carried a slim 33-31 lead into halftime thanks to red-hot first-half shooting. The Panthers connected on 71 percent (5-7) of their three-point shots in the opening period and quickly extended their lead to seven points, 40-33, with a 7-2 run out of intermission. Bowdoin replied with a 7-0 surge to tie the game at 40-40 after a Neil Fuller jumper with 12:06 on the clock.
The teams traded the lead four times over the next eight minutes, with Burt giving the visitors their final lead of the night on a fadeaway jumper, 49-48, with 4:09 remaining. Hausman quickly answered with a jumper to regain the lead for the Polar Bears, sparking a 10-0 run to the close the game for Bowdoin. Pieri added a key three-pointer from the left wing with 2:29 to go and a put-back by Swords pushed the lead to six points, 55-49, with under two minutes to play.
Bowdoin hit on 47 percent of its shots for the game as Plymouth cooled off in the second half to finish at 36 percent. Bowdoin held a 33-25 edge in rebounding and the teams committed just 12 turnovers combined.
The Polar Bears, who concluded their regular-season home slate with the win, will return to action with a key NESCAC contest at Middlebury on Sunday, February 9 at 3:00 p.m. The Panthers will hit the court this Saturday for Little East Conference play at Western Connecticut for a 3:00 p.m. start.
