Chargers red-hot shooting does in Panthers

PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Junior Peter Donato (Portland, Maine) led all scorers with 27 points Saturday evening as Colby-Sawyer College got past Plymouth State University, 81-54, in the men's basketball season opener for both teams at Foley Gymnasium.

Senior Zach Bean (Scarborough, Maine) and junior Wol Majong (Manchester, N.H.) each scored 14 for the Chargers and senior Mike Dias (Carver, Mass.) added 10 points.  Junior Jake Maynard (Shelburne, Vt.) also had a nice game, scoring eight points and pulling down eight rebounds in the victory.

Plymouth State was led by sophomore Curtis Arsenault (Berlin, N.H.), who finished with 13 points and seven rebounds.  Sophomore Ernie Johnson (Springfield, Mass.) added nine points and junior Uche Nwokeji (Lynn, Mass.) chipped in eight points and six rebounds.

Colby-Sawyer jumped out to a 15-6 lead over the first seven minutes, before Plymouth State used a 17-8 spurt to tie the score at 23 with 6:29 to play in the first half.  The Chargers then erupted for a 15-0 run, sparked by a pair of Maynard three's and capped off by a long range score for Majong.  The teams traded baskets over the final two minutes, with Colby-Sawyer leading 42-31 at the half.

The two teams played even in the early minutes of the second half, before Colby-Sawyer went on an 11-0 run, pushing the lead to 56-35 with 14:01 to play.  Plymouth State tried to chip away at the lead but the Chargers' hot outside shooting kept Plymouth State from mounting any serious comeback.  Colby-Sawyer finished 6-of-8 from long range in the second half, including 4-of-5 over the final 12:00.

Plymouth State (0-1) looks to regroup when it returns to the court Tuesday, Nov. 18 at 8:00 p.m. against Rivier University.  The game will be played at NHTI as part of the Boys & Girls Club Classic.  Colby-Sawyer (1-0) also plays Tuesday, hosting UMass Boston at 7:00 p.m.
