Five Panthers in double figures; Burt named to All-Tournament Team
WATERVILLE, Maine – Senior Alex Burt (Dover, N.H.) was named to the All-Tournament Team after scoring 18 points to lead the Plymouth State University men's basketball team past Daniel Webster College, 83-61, in the consolation game of the 2014 Colby Classic.
Burt paced the Panther offense by connecting on 6-of-10 shots, including 4-of-7 from long range, and was one of five Panthers to score double digits. Sophomore Curtis Arsenault (Berlin, N.H.) finished with 15 points, eight rebounds and four steals. Junior Uche Nwokeji (Lynn, Mass.) totaled 13 points and four rebounds, while sophomores Logan Kesty (New Boston, N.H.) and Jack Preston (Nashua, N.H.) added 13 and 10 points respectively. Sophomore guard Nathan Clarke (Reading, Mass.) also contributed in a big way, dishing out a game high 10 assists to accompany his six points and three steals.
Plymouth State jumped out to an early 7-0 lead before the Eagles responded with a 9-2 run to knot the score at 9-9 after five minutes of play. From there the game remained close as the two teams traded baskets. A three by Daniel Webster junior Ryan Gauthier (Nashua, N.H.) cut the Panther lead to 30-26 with just under six minutes in the first half but Plymouth responded with an 11-5 spurt to end the half with a 41-31 lead.
The Panthers controlled the second half with some hot shooting. Plymouth was a sizzling 19-of-27 from the field (70.4%) in the final 20 minutes never allowing Daniel Webster to get close. The Eagles cut the deficit to single digits in the early minutes of the half but Plymouth's relentless offensive attack proved to be too much,
Daniel Webster was led by All-Tournament Team selection Ray Farmer (Nashua, N.H.). The sophomore scored a game high 23 points and pulled down five rebounds. Gauthier chipped in with 14 points and junior Demetri Conwell (St. Paul, Minn.) added 12 points and eight rebounds.
Plymouth State (2-2) travels to Castleton State on Tuesday, November 25th, for a 7:30 p.m. game. Daniel Webster is off until after the Thanksgiving holiday, hosting Regis College in their NECC opener on Saturday, December 6th (1:00 p.m.).
