Panthers drop LEC game despite Nwokeji's strong play
WILLIMANTIC, Conn. – The Eastern Connecticut State University men's basketball team scored the first ten points of the game in posting an 88-57 Little East Conference (LEC) victory over Plymouth State University Saturday afternoon at Francis E. Geissler Gymnasium.
With the victory Eastern Connecticut (14-7, 8-2 LEC) opens up a two-game lead in the conference standings. Plymouth State falls to 13-8 and 4-6 in conference play, while fighting for playoff seeding.
ECSU senior Trachone Preston (Enfield, Conn.) and sophomore Tarchee Brown (Rockville, Conn.) combined for 25 points on 10-of-15 shooting to stake the Warriors to a 44-24 halftime lead. Brown also grabbed eight rebounds, handed out three assists and came up with two steals over the first 20 minutes.
Senior Uche Nwokeji (Lynn, Mass.) paced the Panther offense with 10 points in the opening 20 minutes. He also pulled down five rebounds. Sophomore Brian Boulay (Keene, N.H.) added six points in the first half.
Boulay opened the second half with a three-pointer but the Warriors responded with a 19-3 run to put the game out of reach.
Plymouth State was led by Nwokeji's 17 points and eight rebounds, while Boulay and freshman Mike Osgood (Nashua, N.H.) added nine points apiece. Sophomore Collin Sullivan (Plymouth, N.H.) and junior Nick MacGregor (Rochester, N.H.) both chipped in with six points.
Brown led all players with 19 points and a season-high 10 rebounds. Preston had 17 points and six assists.
Plymouth State wraps up the home portion of its schedule with a pair of contests next week. The Panthers host rival Keene State on Wednesday night (7:30 p.m.), before celebrating Senior Day on Saturday (Feb. 13) against UMass Boston (3:00 p.m.). Eastern Connecticut will play at Western Connecticut State University on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
