Five PSU student-athletes receive weekly conference honors

Panthers honored in men's & women's hockey and men's hoop

            PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Five Plymouth State University student-athletes were recognized with weekly honors from their respective conferences on Monday for their performances in Panther victories last week.

            In women's ice hockey, junior Mariah Trupp (Topeka, Kansas) was named New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) Goaltender of the Week and freshman Alexis Fagan (Wakefield, R.I.) was a member of the Weekly Honor Roll; In men's ice hockey, sophomore Matt Volonnino (Hackettstown, N.J.) and freshman Thierry Messervier (Montreal, Que.) were selected to the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) Weekly Honor Roll; and in men's basketball, freshman Jaylen Leroy (Manchester, N.H./Central) was tabbed the Little East Conference (LEC) Rookie of the Week.

            A third-year goalie for the Panthers, Trupp recorded 39 saves on 41 shots in Saturday's NEHC victory over Salve Regina University. She turned aside all 16 shots she faced in the third period to secure

the victory for the Panthers. Fagan was the offensive star in the game, tallying a goal and two assists in the win.

            The Panther women's ice hockey team improved to 2-4-1 overall and 2-3 in the NEHC, and will host Saint Anselm College Tuesday, Nov. 22, in a conference affair at Hanaway Rink (6:00 p.m.)

            A rookie goaltender on the Panther men's team, Messervier posted a 1-1 record with a 1.26 goals against average and a .941 save percentage for the week; He stopped all 10 shots he faced in 34 minutes in a 10-1 win over Framingham State and made 22 saves on 24 shots in a 2-1 overtime loss to Fitchburg State. Volonnino came alive for the Panther offense, tallying two goals and three assists in the two games; He collected a game-high four points on a goal and three assists in the win over Framingham State and scored PSU's only goal in the loss to Fitchburg State.

            The PSU men's hockey team, 4-3-0 overall and 3-1 in the MASCAC, returns to the ice on Thursday, Dec. 1, at home against Worcester State University (6:00 p.m.)

            A 6-2 guard, Leroy got his collegiate career off to a solid start, helping PSU to a pair of victories (2-0), averaging 10.5 points and shooting 61.5 percent from the field. He scored 13 points and grabbed three rebounds in a season-opening win over Rivier, and added eight points in a win over Norwich. Leroy made 5-of-7 field goal attempts (1-of-2 from three-point range) against Rivier and 3-of-6 (2-of-4 from three-point range) against Norwich.

            The PSU men's hoop squad plays its next four games on the road, beginning Tuesday, Nov. 22, at Castleton University (7:30 p.m.)
