Osgood paces Panthers in non-conference victory

PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Junior Mike Osgood (Nashua, N.H.) stuffed the stat sheet with 27 points (11-of-15), eight rebounds and five assists to lead the Plymouth State University men's basketball team to a 92-84 overtime win over Norwich University at Andrews Hall on Saturday afternoon.

PSU improved to 2-0 after getting exceptional performances from Osgood, sophomore Jaylen Leroy (Manchester, N.H.) and junior Liam Densmore (Portland, Maine). Leroy drained three triples to finish with 24 points and four assists, while Densmore kept up his hot shooting from long range. The 5-10 guard sank five-of-eight from distance to finish with 17 points.

The Cadets (0-1) played with a lead most of the first half. The home team went ahead 18-9 after a layup from senior Zygimantas Sirvydas (Silale, Lithuania). The Panthers responded with an 8-0 run to pull within one, including long balls from Osgood and junior Chris Calnan (Wakefield, Mass.).

Norwich again went up by nine, 28-19, but PSU closed the first half with an extended 15-9 run to cut the margin to 37-34 at the half.

Plymouth pulled ahead in the opening three minutes of the second half. Osgood's jumper put PSU in front 41-40, and moments later Densmore hit a pair of treys to give the Panthers a 49-44 lead.

Norwich jumped back in the lead and a free throw from Sirvydas made it 66-59 with nine minutes remaining. A few minutes later Densmore hit from downtown again, and layups from Osgood and senior Kieran Beck (Danvers, Mass.) put PSU up 73-72. The teams traded three-pointers and free throws and the score was knotted at 79-79 as the final buzzer expired.

Norwich took an 84-83 lead after a pair of free throws by senior Ryan Booth (Northfield, Vt.), but Leroy made a driving layup then sank a three after a Norwich turnover to go up 88-84 with a minute to play. A pair of freebies by Leroy and junior Chase Soares (Falmouth, Mass.) secured the 92-84 win.

PSU will open its home schedule on Tuesday (Nov. 21) with a 7:30 tipoff against Castleton University.
