PSU Men’s Basketball dropped by UMass-Dartmouth in LEC opener

Leroy leads Panthers with 19 points

PLYMOUTH, N.H. – The Plymouth State University men's basketball team opened its Little East Conference (LEC) schedule with a 93-63 loss to the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth on Saturday afternoon in Foley Gymnasium.

The Panthers have dropped three-straight games to dip to 2-3 overall (0-1 LEC), while the Corsairs improve to 5-1 (1-0 LEC).

After falling behind early the Panthers utilized a six-point run capped with a layup by sophomore Jaylen Leroy (Manchester, N.H.) to put PSU ahead 6-4. The Corsairs responded with a 9-2 spurt before Leroy scored the game's next five points. A pair of free throws by junior Chase Soares (Falmouth, Mass.) tied the game at 15-15 midway through the first half.

Two minutes later junior Mike Osgood (Nashua, N.H.) drained a 12-footer to put the hosts ahead 19-18. Soares added two more from the charity stripe and Leroy's layup expanded the Panthers' lead to 23-19. PSU held a slight lead until freshman Jake Ashworth (Fairhaven, Mass.) connected from long range to give the Corsairs a lead they wouldn't relinquish.

UMD slowly added to the advantage, going up 42-33 with 38 seconds left in the first half after a jumper from junior Arinze Obiora (Lagos, Nigeria), but junior Ryan Smith (Melrose, Mass.) connected for PSU from inside just before the clock expired to make the halftime score 42-35.

Junior Liam Densmore (Portland, Maine) opened the second half with a pair of free throws to cut the deficit to five, 42-37, but that was as close as the Panthers would get as UMD scored the next 12 points to take control of the game.

Leroy added five rebounds to his 19-point performance, while Osgood contributed 17 points and nine boards. The Corsairs had six players finish in double figures, with Obiora leading the pack with 23 to go along with his 12 rebounds and three blocks. Senior Joshua Imadiyi (Lynn, Mass.) also had a double-double, finishing with 13 points and 11 rebounds, plus three blocked shots of his own.

The Corsairs finished an impressive 38-of-69 from the field (55.1%), and owned a 50-30 advantage on points in the paint. Plymouth struggled from long range, connected on just one of 16 attempts from beyond the arc.

The Panthers will travel to Framingham State for a non-conference contest on Tuesday (Dec. 5), with tipoff set for 6:00 p.m. UMass Dartmouth will host Roger Williams on Thursday (Dec. 7) at 7:00 p.m.
