Osgood posts 22 in LEC setback
PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Junior Mike Osgood (Nashua, N.H.) scored a team-high 22 points but Plymouth State University fell to the University of Massachusetts Boston, 68-53, in a Little East Conference (LEC) men's basketball game at Foley Gymnasium on Wednesday night.
With the loss Plymouth State falls to 6-7 and 0-4 in LEC contests. The Beacons improve to 8-7 overall and 2-2 in league play.
Plymouth struggled to find its stroke in the early going and UMass Boston took advantage to jump out to an 8-0 lead. Sophomore Jaylen Leroy (Manchester, N.H.) scored PSU's first bucket four minutes in, but a three from senior Dan Powers (Westwood, Mass.) gave the visitors a 17-6 lead with nine minutes left in the first half. The teams traded baskets from there as Leroy's three at the buzzer left the home team trailing 25-14 at the intermission.
Leroy had back-to-back buckets to open the second half, but the Beacons answered with a 10-3 run. Senior Kieran Beck (Danvers, Mass.) finished after a pretty dish from Leroy, and Osgood had a pair of baskets to cut the margin back to single digits, 35-27, but freshman Michael Boyd (Malden, Mass.) and Powers connected from distance to stop the spurt.
Junior Liam Densmore (Portland, Maine) drained a three from the left corner and an Osgood layup cut the margin to 51-38 with just over six minutes to play. Osgood drove hard to the basket and drew the contact for an old fashioned three-point play that cut the deficit to 12 points, 60-48, with two-and-a-half minutes remaining, but that was as close as the Panthers would get as UMB closed out the 68-53 win.
Osgood ended with 22 points, nine rebounds, two assists and two steals, with Leroy adding 18 points and five rebounds, ending a streak of three-straight 30-point performances.
The Beacons were led by Powers' 22 points and 13 rebounds, with Boyd and freshman Charlie Mitchell (Boston, Mass.) chipping in with 15 and 10 points respectively.
PSU will travel to Rhode Island College on Saturday for another LEC match-up. Tip-off is set for 3:00 p.m.
