Late rally falls short as PSU Men’s Basketball loses at Southern Maine

Osgood posts game-high 25 points in setback

GORHAM, Maine – Junior Mike Osgood (Nashua, N.H.) scored a game-high 25 points but a late rally from Plymouth State University fell short as the Panthers dropped a 71-67 decision to the University of Southern Maine in a Little East Conference (LEC) men's basketball game at Fifield Court on Thursday night.

With the loss the Panthers' three game winning streak comes to an end as the team falls to 9-13 (1-10 LEC). USM improves to 5-17 (3-8 LEC).

Southern Maine came out firing, opening up a quick 11-3 lead after sinking three early three-pointers. Sophomore Jaylen Leroy (Manchester, N.H.) hit from beyond the arc on consecutive trips for the Panthers to cut the margin to 13-11 after 5:17. USM extended to a 26-20 advantage midway through the opening half, but Leroy answered from distance again.

The Huskies pulled ahead by double-figures, 35-25, with five minutes left in the half but Osgood scored on back-to-back possessions and a three from freshman Sam Bonney-Liles (Hudson, N.H.) capped a 7-0 surge for PSU. USM answered with six-straight points, but senior Collin Sullivan (Plymouth, N.H.) got inside for a layup to make it a 41-34 game at the break.

The home team went up 47-36 after a three from senior Christian McCue (Hampden, Maine), but the Panthers chipped away. Junior Chase Soares (Falmouth, Mass.) got inside for consecutive layups, Sullivan hit from long range and Osgood connected from inside to cut the deficit to 47-45 six minutes into the second half, but USM answered with a 12-2 spurt to take its biggest lead of the game, 59-47, with 9:35 to play.

The Panthers responded. Soares hit from long range to spark an 11-2 run for the Panthers and Osgood's layup with five minutes to play cut the Huskies' lead to 61-58. USM looked to have things wrapped up after scoring the next six points to lead 67-58, but Leroy hit from downtown with a minute to play. Osgood added a layup, then came up with a key steal and basket to cut it to 67-65 with 12 seconds left, but USM finished a perfect four-of-four from the charity stripe to hold on for the 71-67 win.

Osgood and Leroy were the game's top two scorers, finishing with 25 and 18 points, respectively. Osgood ended 12-of-23 from the floor and added seven rebounds and four assists, while Leroy finished 4-of-10 from distance and pulled down seven rebounds of his own. Soares was the third Panther in double figures, finishing with 12 points and six boards.

USM had five players finish in double figures, led by senior Donne Agossou (Auburn, Maine). The 6-2 guard finished 8-of-9 for 16 points. Freshman DJ Anderson (Houston, Texas) finished with 15 points, with McCue, sophomore Keenan Hendricks (Owls Head, Maine) and junior Grayson Waterman (Berwick, Maine) all chipping in with 11 points.

PSU travels to the University of Massachusetts Boston for another LEC contest on Saturday. Game-time is set for 3:00 p.m. The Panthers will return home for two home games next week to wrap up the regular season schedule.
