Osgood continues hot shooting for the Panthers
BOSTON, Mass. – A hot start helped lead the University of Massachusetts Boston to a 76-62 win over Plymouth State University in a Little East Conference (LEC) men's basketball game at the Clark Athletic Center Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon.
The Beacons (13-10, 7-5 LEC) used a 23-7 run through the first 12 minutes of the game to seize control of the contest. Plymouth State (9-14, 1-11 LEC) clawed back in the second half, cutting the deficit down to just eight points with seven minutes to play, but the Beacons answered with a late run to put the game away.
UMB took a 38-22 lead into the half, but junior Chase Soares (Falmouth, Mass.) connected from beyond the arc twice to cut the lead to 10 points, 38-28, just 2:33 into the second half. UMass Boston followed with a 13-4 surge to push the lead to 19, but PSU clawed back again.
A 9-0 surge for the visitors, including a three-pointer from senior Collin Sullivan (Plymouth, N.H.) and a dunk from junior Mike Osgood (Nashua, N.H.), pulled the Panthers to within ten again, 51-41, with eleven minutes to play.
Osgood's triple cut the lead to single digits with 9:17 remaining, 55-46, and Sullivan hit from downtown again to make it 57-49 just 40 seconds later. Plymouth was unable to get any closer than eight points the rest of the way, though.
An Osgood jumper with 6:53 left made it a 61-53 game, but the Beacons used a 10-0 run to put the game away.
Osgood led the Panthers with 17 points and eight rebounds, while Sullivan added 13 points. Soares contributed 12 points and six rebounds and freshman Ruay Bol (South Portland, Maine) matched Osgood's eight boards and chipped in seven points in 29 minutes off the bench.
Freshman Charles Mitchell (Boston, Mass.) led the contest with 17 points on 7-of-13 shooting, which featured three of the Beacons' six three-pointers. Sophomore Dasan Cinelli (Boston, Mass.), who did a majority of the work for the Beacons in the first half, finished with 16 points, while freshman Michael Boyd added 16 second half points. Senior Dan Powers (Westwood, Mass.) also finished in double figures with 10 points and added seven rebounds and two blocked shots.
Plymouth State is back in action at home this Wednesday (Feb. 14) for a Valentine's Day clash with Keene State College at 7:30 p.m.
