Rivera honored following record-breaking performance

PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Just days after one of the most impressive shooting performances in Plymouth State University men's basketball history, freshman Dante Rivera (Methuen, Mass.) has been chosen as the Little East Conference (LEC) Rookie of the Week.

Rivera averaged 27 points and four assists while shooting 54.3% from the field and 56.0% from beyond the arc to lead the Panthers to a 2-0 mark while establishing himself among the Panthers' all-time great shooters.

He opened the week with a team-high 20-point effort in Plymouth State's 88-69 win over Northern Vermont University-Johnson, finishing 7-of-14 from the field and 4-of-7 from downtown while adding four assists and a pair of steals, but the sharp-shooting rookie saved his best for last.

In Saturday's 82-49 drubbing of Castleton University, the 5-8 guard dazzled fans with a school-record ten triples on the way to a career-high 34 points with four assists and three rebounds. Shortly after tying the record with a deep three from the right wing Rivera momentarily checked out of the game, but quickly returned to bury a shot from eight feet behind the line on the left wing to set the new standard.

Rivera leads all freshmen in the LEC in scoring (16 ppg), tops the conference in three-point percentage (47.0%, min. three attempts per game) and is one of just eight players in the league shooting 50% or better from the floor. It is his third Rookie of the Week honor.

Plymouth State (10-7, 5-4 LEC) has a pair of conference road games this week, starting with Rhode Island College on Wednesday (Jan. 23) before visiting league-leading Eastern Connecticut State on Saturday (Jan. 27). The Panthers are back at home for a non-conference game with Elms College next Monday (Jan. 28).
