Rivera named Rookie of the Week for Panthers

PLYMOUTH, N.H. – The top-scoring freshman for the Plymouth State University men's basketball team was honored by the Little East Conference on Monday, when the league announced its weekly awards winners.

Freshman Dante Rivera (Methuen, Mass.) was selected as the LEC Men's Basketball Rookie of the Week after helping guide the Panthers to a big win in the team's lone competition last week.

Rivera matched a team-high with 23 points on 7-of-12 shooting as PSU rolled past the University of Southern Maine, 102-86, to help the Panthers lock up the sixth seed for this week's LEC Tournament. The sharp-shooter finished 3-of-7 from long range and added four steals and three assists in the win. It is his fourth Rookie of the Week honor of the season.

Rivera is averaging 16.4 points per game, tops in the conference among freshmen, and leads the league in three-point shooting (44.7%) among players with at least three attempts per game. He's also top-four in the conference in steals per game (2.7) and assists per game (4.3).

Plymouth State (13-12, 7-9 LEC) finished sixth in the final regular season standings. The Panthers head to the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth on Tuesday (Feb. 19) for a first round game against the third-seeded Corsairs. The teams split the regular season series, with each school winning on the road. PSU held on for a 90-86 win at the Tripp Athletic Center on Dec. 1, while UMD returned the favor with an 88-81 victory at Foley Gymnasium on Feb. 9. Plymouth State is searching for its first playoff win since the 2004-05 season.
