UMass Dartmouth edges PSC
WATERVILLE VALLEY, N.H. - Sophomore Jared Spencer (Arlington, Mass.) scored a pair of goals Saturday evening to lead the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth to a 3-2 victory over Plymouth State College in an ECAC Northeast Conference ice hockey game at Waterville Valley Ice Arena.
Spencer scored the only goal of the first period, an unassisted marker as the visiting Corsairs took a 1-0 lead. Spencer made it 2-0 at the 3:52 mark of the second, with junior Mike Knezacek (Creston, B.C.) picking up the assist. Freshman Shawn Sheehan (Medford, Mass.) connected just 18 seconds later to give the Corsairs a three-goal lead, with junior Sean Young (Waltham, Mass.) and freshman Chris Dussault (Billerica, Mass.) registering the assists.
Plymouth State would not surrender, though. Junior Mike Zegarelli (Clinton, N.Y.) put the Panthers on the board with his third goal of the season at the 12:56 mark of the second period, with senior Matt McPhee (Plymouth, Mass.) and freshman Garrett Dionne (Clarence Center, N.Y.) assisting on the play.
The Panthers pulled to within one goal a minute and 13 seconds into the third period, as senior defenseman Jack Langelier (Marlboro, Mass.) connected on his second career goal from sophomore Dave Moore (Anchorage, AK) and Dionne. But PSC could not get the tying goal, and UMD held on for the win.
UMD junior goalie Kim Clark (Gardner, Mass.) was credited with 44 saves, while PSC junior netminder Larry Forgue (Nashua, N.H.) turned aside 51 shots.
PSC, 1-9-1 overall and 1-2-0 in the ECAC Northeast, returns to action with a conference game at Assumption Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. UMD, 7-5-0 and 3-2-0, plays Thursday at Salve Regina.
