Upset-minded PSC falls in OT to Wentworth
WATERVILLE VALLEY, N.H. - Senior Ivan Filippov (Delta, B.C.) scored a goal 1:56 into overtime Saturday to lead Wentworth Institute of Technology to a 4-3 come-from-behind victory over Plymouth State College in an ECAC Northeast conference ice hockey game at Waterville Valley Ice Arena.
Plymouth State nearly pulled off the startling upset over the Leopards, scoring twice in the third period to take a 3-2 lead, but Wentworth got the equalizer by senior Tim Hebert (Lewiston, Maine) with 1:37 remaining to set up Filippov's game-winner.
The win moves Wentworth to 10-1-0 in the Northeast, 11-6-1 overall, while upset-minded PSC drops to 2-7-0 in the conference, 2-14-1 overall.
PSC senior Erik Nadeau (Waterville, Maine), the Panthers' active career scoring leader with 24 goals and 67 points, finally scored his first two goals of the season. He gave PSC a 1-0 lead eight minutes into the contest, and then evened the score at 2-2 four minutes and 41 seconds into the third period.
After Nadeau's first goal, Wentworth battled back to take a 2-1 lead. Freshman Chris Hartley (Portland, OR) and junior Tim Yakimowsky (Walpole, Mass.) scored just 17 seconds apart midway through the first period.
With the score tied at 2-2, PSC took the lead with 3:21 to play in the third on a goal by freshman Eric Clark (West Hartford, Conn.). But the Leopards pulled out the win with Hebert's tying goal and Filippov's overtime winner.
Wentworth freshman Raj Bhangoo (Caladon East ONT) made 30 saves in the Leopard net, while freshman Mike Mansson (Jackson, Wy.) and junior Larry Forgue (Nashua, N.H.) combined for 44 saves in the Panther goal.
PSC plays again Tuesday (Jan. 30) at Curry (7 p.m.) while Wentworth hosts Nichols Tuesday at 8 p.m.
