ESSEX, Vt. - The Saint Michael's men's ice hockey team got its seventh win of the season Thursday night with a 4-1 decision over ECAC Northeast rival Plymouth State at the Essex Junction Skating Facility. With the win, the Purple Knights improve to 7-11-2 overall and 6-6-1 in the conference, while the Panthers drop to 3-15-1 and 3-8-0.
Saint Michael's came out strong in the first period, scoring two quick goals, as Gavin Faretra and Jason Harrington both scored just 13 seconds apart to give the Purple Knights an early 2-0 lead.
After a quick scoring spurt, the teams' defense took over and kept one another scoreless for the rest of the period. The same was true for the entire second period as no one was able to score for either team, though both teams got a fair number of shots on net. The Purple Knights managed to get off 12 shots in the second period, while the Panthers had 10 shots.
Things became more interesting in the third period as Plymouth State's Mike Jackson (Middleton, Mass.) narrowed Saint Michael's lead 2-1 with a shot that got passed Saint Michael's goalie Simon Theberge to put the visitors on the board. Sophomores Dan Molinari (Hyannis, Mass.) and Craig Russell (Northfield, Vt.) assisted on the play.
The Purple Knights needed an insurance goal, and got two for the price of one when Martin Hyun scored at 18:11 on passes by Justin Quenneville and Theberge. They followed that up with an empty netter by Jeremy Coccaro with less than a minute to go to ice the victory.
Theberge, who got his first assist of the year tonight, stopped 25 shots for the win, while Mike Mansson (Jackson, Wy.) and Larry Forgue (Nashua, N.H.) combined for 31 saves for the Panthers. Mansson made 11 stops in the first 20 minutes, and Forgue turned aside 21 shots in the final two periods.
PSC returns to action Sunday (Feb. 4) with a 2:15 p.m. contest at Stonehill College.
