PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Sophomore Chris Thunman scored his second goal of the game on the power play with 2:01 remaining in the third period Wednesday night, lifting Johnson & Wales University to a 4-3 victory over Plymouth State College in an ECAC Northeast conference match-up.
JWU, which leads the ECAC Northeast, improves to 7-0-0 in conference play and 7-5-0 overall, while PSC drops to 1-7-0 overall and 1-4-0 in the Northeast.
The Wildcats led after one period on goals by Derek Foster and Brock Palazeti. The Panthers battled back to tie the game at 2-apiece with second-period goals from freshman Kyle Poirier (Concord, N.H.) and sophomore Mike Jackson (Middleton, Mass.), but JWU took a 3-2 lead into the third period on Thunman's first goal at 11:54 of the second.
The Panthers evened the score at 3-3 at the 4:32 mark of the third when junior Tony LaScola (Farifax, Va.) knocked in his second of the season. But PSC's upset hopes were dashed on Thunman's PPG with two minutes remaining.
Johnson & Wales outshot the Panthers, 34-29. Senior goalie Larry Forgue (Nashua, N.H.) made 30 saves, while Nick Lacroix made 26 stops for the Wildcats.
PSC concludes competition for the first semester this Saturday with an 8:00 p.m. face-off at Nichols College.
