Tufts comes back to down PSC
WATERVILLE VALLEY, N.H. - Freshman John Hurd (Arlington, Mass.) netted three goals and junior Mike Carceo (Belmont, Mass.) added a goal and three assists, leading Tufts University to a 7-2 non-conference hockey victory over Plymouth State College Tuesday night at Waterville Valley Ice Arena.
The Jumbos had to overcome a 2-0 deficit, as PSC put a pair of goals on the board in the first four minutes of the contest. But Tufts countered with seven unanswered goals, including three power play tallies and a shorthanded marker.
Sophomore Aaron Keller (Concord, N.H.) and freshman Kyle Poirier (Concord, N.H.) gave PSC the early lead, Poirier scoring his team-leading eighth of the season and Keller connecting on his sixth of the year. Freshman Brian Conti (Watertown, Mass.) scored the only goal of the first period for Tufts.
It was all Jumbos in the middle frame. Hurd tied the game at 2-2 with his first goal at 4:54, and freshman Gino Rotondi (Winchester, Mass.) gave the visitors their first lead of the evening at 9:14. Hurd finished off his hat trick with a pair of power play goals to close out the second period scoring.
Carceo, who assisted on all three of Hurd's goal, added a shorthanded marker at 16:10 of the third period, and junior Matt Potts (Phillipsburg, N.J.) added a power play goal in the final minute.
Tufts sophomore Ben Crapser (Paxton, Mass.) made 34 saves to earn the win, with senior Jeremy Zuniga (San Francisco, Cal.) coming off the bench for the final two minutes and making two saves. PSC sophomore Mike Mansson (Wilson, Wy.) and senior Larry Forgue (Nashua, N.H.) combined for 18 stops.
