Panthers come back to tie UMD

WATERVILLE VALLEY, N.H. - Plymouth State College overcame a two-goal third-period deficit Saturday evening to pull out a 2-2 overtime tie with UMass Dartmouth in an ECAC Northeast Conference ice hockey game at Waterville Valley Ice Arena.

After a pair of scoreless periods, the visiting Corsairs scored two goals 1:09 apart early in the third to take a 2-0 lead. But the Panthers battled back with a pair of goals of their own just four minutes apart midway through the period to tie the game. Both teams had scoring opportunities the rest of the way, but neither was able to get the game-winner.

UMD sophomore Brandon Koziara (West Springfield, Mass.) broke the scoreless tie at 2:47 of the third period with his second goal of the season. Freshman Ryan O'Connell (Salisbury, Mass.) put home his first career goal at 3:56 to give the Corsairs a two-goal advantage.

Freshman defenseman Paul Feeney (Lowell, Mass.) put PSC on the board at the 9:39 mark, knocking the puck out of mid air and into the goal for his first career point. Sophomore defenseman Max Wernert (Greenwich, Conn.) scored the equalizer at 13:19 of the third, his first of the season.

Both goaltenders turned in solid performances. PSC junior Mike Mansson (Wilson, Wyo.) finished with 31 saves and UMD sophomore Kevin McGowan (Hingham, Mass.) made 17 saves. The Corsairs had a 33-19 advantage in shots on goal.

PSC, 0-1-1, plays its next three games on the road, beginning with a non-conference encounter on Tuesday, Dec. 3, at the University of Southern Maine (7:00 p.m.). UMD, 3-1-1 overall and 1-1-1 in conference play, faces Worcester State in a conference game this Monday (Nov. 25) at 8:00 p.m. in Worcester.
