Third-period rally leads PSC past Nichols

AUBURN, Mass. - Sophomore Mitchell LaFleur (Levittown, Pa.) scored a short-handed goal at 9:27 of the third period, which proved to be the game-winner as Plymouth State College posted a 5-3 victory over Nichols College Thursday evening in a non-conference ice hockey game

PSC, 3-1-1 in its last five outings, improves to 3-4-3 overall, while Nichols drops to 1-9-2.

The visiting Panthers held a 2-0 lead midway through the hockey game, as junior Matt Toutain (Lewiston, Maine) connected on a first-period goal and sophomore Kyle Poirier (Concord, N.H.) added a power play marker seven minutes into the second period. It was Poirier's sixth goal of the season, all coming with the man-advantage.

Nichols responded with a pair of goals late in the second frame, as Dan Torti (Oxford, Mass.) and David Berardinelli (Warwick, R.I.) evened the game at 2-2.

PSC iced the game in the third period with three unanswered goals. Senior Tony LaScola (Fairfax, Va.) broke the tie at 5:26 before LaFleur gave the Panthers a two-goal advantage. Freshman Dennis Kane (Westford, Mass.) potted his team-leading eighth of the season for insurance with 1:46 remaining. Paul Brady (Halifax, Mass.) rounded out the scoring for the Bisons 33 seconds later, but PSC held on for the win.

Freshman Chris Hyson (Colchester, Conn.) earned his second straight win in the Panther net, making 30 saves, while Nichols senior Matt Altieri (Pennington, N.J.) stopped 36 shots. PSC had a 41-33 advantage in shots on goal.

Plymouth State returns to ECAC Northeast Conference action Sunday at Framingham State (6:30 p.m.). The game was originally scheduled for Saturday but was moved to Sunday.
