MILTON, Mass. - Sophomore Sean Pero (Dorchester, Mass.) registered a goal and an assist Tuesday night to lead the Curry College hockey team to a 4-2 victory over Plymouth State College in an ECAC Northeast contest.
The Colonels won for the fifth time in their last six outings and improved to 11-8-0 overall and 7-3-0 in the Northeast. PSC dropped its fifth in a row to dip to 4-9-3 overall and 2-6-2 in league play.
Pero scored the only goal of the first period to give the hosts a 1-0 lead. Sophomore Ryan Murphy (Winthrop, Mass.) gave Curry a 2-0 advantage five minutes into the second frame, and Pero set up freshman Jonathan Whitham (Fitchburg, Mass.) for a power-play goal at 12:45 to make it a 3-0 game.
The Panthers got on the board with 3:44 to play in the second when freshman Matt Gotts (Danvers, Mass.) scored his first career goal, a power play marker from sophomore Mitchell LaFleur (Levittown, Pa.) and freshman Dennis Kane (Westford, Mass.), but sophomore Dan Bliss (Medway, Mass.) scored at 19:14 of the second period to give Curry its three-goal lead back.
PSC junior Mike Jackson (Middleton, Mass.) scored the only goal of the third period, his third of the season, but Curry held on for the win. The Colonels finished with a 48-24 advantage in shots on goal.
Freshman Kyle VanDingstee (Skaneateles, N.Y.) made his PSC debut a memorable one in the Panther goal, stopping 44 shots. Curry goalie Lenny Mosca (Ludlow, Mass.) made 22 saves to record the win.
Plymouth State, which has played four straight and six of the last seven on the road, returns home for a four-game homestand at Waterville Valley Ice Arena. Five of PSC's last seven games will be on home ice, beginning Saturday against Johnson & Wales University (6:00 p.m.).
