Late goal helps PSC tie Salve

WATERVILLE VALLEY, N.H. - Freshman Dennis Kane (Westford, Mass.) scored the game-tying goal with 11 seconds remaining in regulation Sunday night, and Plymouth State College went on to finish in a 5-5 overtime deadlock against Salve Regina University in an ECAC Northeast Conference ice hockey game at Waterville Valley Ice Arena.

It was a little payback after last year's affair, when Salve overcame a 2-0 deficit to PSC with two goals in the final minute to force a 2-2 overtime tie.

After surrendering a 2-0 lead Sunday, PSC came from behind three times to tie the game. Sophomore Kyle Poirier (Concord, N.H.) had two goals and an assist to lead Plymouth State, and freshman Joe Piekos (Medford, Mass.) scored twice to pace the Seahawks.

The outcome gives Salve a 10-10-1 overall record and a 7-5-1 mark in league play, remaining in seventh place. PSC is now 5-11-4 overall and 3-8-3 in the Northeast, holding in 10th place and still alive for the eighth play-off spot.

PSC took a 2-0 lead in the first nine minutes on goals by freshman Matt Gotts (Danvers, Mass.) and Poirier. Junior Bryan Croft (Penacook, N.H.) assisted on both goals, and Poirier also helped set up the goal by Gotts.

Salve came back to tie it before the end of the period on goals by Matthew Hilberg (Westwood, Mass.) and Piekos, and took a 3-2 lead midway through the second on a score by Frank Mingone (White Plains, N.Y.).

Poirier tied it at 3-3 at 13:06 of the second with his second of the game and eighth of the season, but Salve took a one-goal lead into the third when Piekos added his second of the game a minute later. PSC's Max Wernert (Greenwich, Conn.) and Salve's Billy Baker (Milton, Mass.) traded goals a minute apart midway through the third, and it looked like it was going to be Salve's game until Kane saved the Panthers.

Salve finished with a 44-39 advantage in shots on goal. Senior Chris Burns (Quincy, Mass.) made 34 saves for Salve, and PSC freshman Chris Hyson (Colchester, Conn.), who had been pulled for an extra attacker for the game-tying goal, finished with 39 saves.

PSC plays a non-conference game Tuesday at Tufts (7:30 p.m.). Salve plays again Tuesday at Western New England (7:30 p.m.)
