UMass Boston nips PSU in PAL Stovepipe Hockey Tourn.

HOOKSETT, N.H. - Junior Pat Donlan's (Norwell, MA) goal with 18 seconds to play in regulation lifted UMass Boston to a 5-4 victory over Plymouth State University Sunday in the consolation game of the Police Athletic League (PAL) "Stovepipe" Tournament at Tri-Town Arena..

It marked the first win of the year for the Beacons (1-3-0), while PSU dropped to 1-3-0. UMB also snapped a 31-game winless streak (0-29-2), which dated back to the end of the 2001-02 season.

PSU battled back from a 4-1 deficit and tied the game at 4-4 following a goal by sophomore Dennis Kane (Westford, MA) with 6:19 left in the third period. The game appeared headed for overtime until Donlan collected a loose puck between the circles in the PSU zone and fired a wrist shot past PSU goalkeeper Trevor Cherry (Greenland, NH) for his second goal of the year. Senior Mike Ciarletta (Watertown, MA) and sophomore James Crank (West Bloomfield, MA) assisted on the goal.

Crank finished with two goals and one assist for the Beacons, while Ciarletta and senior Brian Sullivan (Mansfield, MA) both recorded three assists. Sophomore Rory Nickerson (West Chatham, MA) led the Panthers with a goal and three assists, while Kane finished with a goal and two assists.

Senior Craig Paster (Westwood, MA) went the distance in net for UMass Boston and finished with 26 saves, 20 of which came over the final two periods. Cherry stopped 22 shots for the Panthers in his collegiate debut.

PSU returns to action Tuesday (12/2) when it hosts the University of Southern Maine at Waterville Valley Ice Arena (6:00 p.m.). UMB is idle until Friday (12/5) when it travels to Wesleyan University.
