Poirier leads PSU Ice Hockey past Nichols

AUBURN, Mass. - Junior Kyle Poirier (Concord, N.H.) scored two goals and added one assist Saturday night to lead Plymouth State University ice hockey team to a 5-3 victory over Nichols College in an ECAC Northeast Conference game.

The win stops a five-game losing streak for the Panthers, and sends PSU into the break for final exams and the holidays with a 2-2-0 record in the conference, 2-5-0 overall. Nichols lost for the sixth time in its last seven outings, dropping 2-3-0 in the Northeast and 3-7-0 overall.

Poirier gave the Panthers a 1-0 lead less than three minutes into the game, and the Panthers broke open the contest with a three-goal second period. Sophomore Nick DeBaggis (Topsfield, Mass.), freshman Derek Avakian (Edgartown, Mass.) and senior Mike Jackson (Middleton, Mass.) all collected goals in the middle frame to give the Panthers a 4-2 advantage.

Poirier added his second of the game six minutes into the third period, and Nichols could add only one more goal. Freshman goalie Trevor Cherry (Greenland, N.H.) made 24 saves to post his first career victory for PSU. Ryan Davis had 30 saves for the Bison, as PSU outshot Nichols, 35-27.
