WATERVILLE VALLEY, N.H. - Senior Dan Pike (Hilton, N.Y.) scored three goals, including the game-tying and game-winning goals in the third period, leading Assumption College to a 6-5 victory over Plymouth State University Saturday evening in an ECAC Northeast Conference hockey game at Waterville Valley Ice Arena.
Pike, whose hat trick included an even strength goal 13 seconds in the game, a power play marker to tie things up a 3:01 of the third, and the game-winner, unassisted and shorthanded at 9:45 of the third. He helped the Ice Dogs improve to 6-8-1 overall and 4-4-0 in the conference, while PSU drops to 6-7-0 and 2-4-0.
Sophomore Kevin Cotter (Franklin, Mass.) scored one goal and three assists to add to Assumption's cause. Junior Scott Herson (Gardiner, Maine) and sophomore Jeff Ilvonen (Auburn, Mass.) also collected a goal apiece.
Sophomore Dennis Kane (Westford, Mass.) led the Panther offense, scoring two goals and one assist. Junior Kyle Poirier (Concord, N.H.) and sophomores Matt Withers (Laconia, N.H.) and Paul Feeney (Lowell, Mass.) also put goals on the board for the home team.
PSU came from behind three times to tie the game at 1-1, 2-2 and 4-4, and took a 5-4 lead on Kane's second goal 44 seconds into the third period. But Pike had the answer for Assumption, and the Ice Dogs held on for the win, thanks to three power play goals and the short-handed game-winner.
Freshman goalie Trevor Cherry (Greenland, N.H.) made 33 saves in the Panther net, while sophomore Mike Sweeney (Plymouth, Mass.) picked up the win for AC with a 32-save effort.
Plymouth State is home again Tuesday night with a conference game against Framingham State (6:00 p.m.), while Assumption returns home to host Johnson & Wales on Thursday (7:30 p.m.).
