Plymouth State falls to Framingham State in ECAC Northeast hockey

WATERVILLE VALLEY, N.H. - Freshman Ben Colby (Newbury, Mass.) broke a 3-3 tie with 3:53 remaining in the third period Tuesday night, and Framingham State College held on for a 5-3 victory over Plymouth State University in an ECAC Northeast Conference hockey game at Waterville Valley Ice Arena.

The Panthers, who had battled back from a 3-1 third-period deficit to tie the game with 6:07 to play, had an excellent chance to tie the game again in the final minute. Trailing 4-3, PSU had a 6-on-4 advantage in skaters, but the Rams had other ideas and clinched the win with a shorthanded, empty net goal.

Framingham State picked up its second straight win and improved to 6-9-1 overall and 5-2-1 in the Northeast. PSU, which dropped to 6-8-0 overall and 2-5-0 in league play, continued its streak of close contests; All 14 games this season have been decided by two goals or less.

Junior Tyson Knudsen (Framingham, Mass.) scored the only goal of the first period to give the Rams the lead. Knudsen and freshman Donald Morgan (Burlington, Mass.) sandwiched power play goals in the second period for the visitors around PSU's man-advantage score by junior Michal Bodnar (Olomouc, Czech Rep.), giving the Rams a 3-1 lead heading into the third period.

The Panthers battled back to even the game when senior Bryan Croft (Penacook, N.H.) scored at the 4:30 mark and sophomore Paul Feeney (Lowell, Mass.) got the equalizer at 13:53, but Colby spoiled the night for the hosts.

Sophomore Josh Wallace (Somerville, Mass.) earned the victory in the Rams net, making 37 saves. Sophomore Kyle VanDingstee (Skaneateles, N.Y.) made 22 saves for the Panthers.

Plymouth State is home again Saturday with a conference game against Wentworth (6:00 p.m.), while Framingham State returns home to host Worcester State Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
