Salve Regina skates past PSU Hockey
PORTSMOUTH, R.I. - Freshman Mario Caouette (Hartford, Conn.) scored a hat trick and assisted on two other goals Saturday night to lead Salve Regina University to a 6-1 victory over Plymouth State University in ECAC Northeast hockey action.
Salve snapped a three-game losing skid and improved to 7-8-1 overall and 5-4-1 in the ECAC Northeast. PSU, which stopped a five-game losing skid Friday night with a 3-2 overtime victory at Johnson & Wales, falls to 7-11-0 overall and 3-8-0 in league play.
Caouette assisted on the first goal of the game midway through the first period, and set up a power play goal by the Seahawks in the middle of the second that gave Salve a 3-1 lead. Caouette then tallied the natural hat trick, scoring during a 4-on-4 situation in the second period, adding an even-strength goal 44 seconds into the third period, and finishing off the scoring with a shorthanded marker late in the third stanza.
Freshman Mykul Haun (Alameda, Cal.) scored the only goal for the Panthers, which at the time tied the game at 1-1 with 3:15 to play in the opening period. But it was all Seahawks in the final two frames as they outscored the Panthers 5-0. Salve finished the game with a 40-30 advantage in shots on goal.
Sophomore goaltender Michael O'Brien (Beverly, Mass.) made 29 saves for Salve to pick up the victory, while PSU senior Michael Mansson (Wilson, Wyo.) was saddled with the loss after making 34 saves.
Plymouth State continues a four-game road swing with a conference game Wednesday at Suffolk (7:00 p.m.), while Salve visits Worcester State on Monday (8:00 p.m.).
