BOSTON, Mass. - Junior Bill Corcoran (Waltham, Mass.) scored two goals and assisted on another Wednesday night, and Suffolk University scored four unanswered third-period goals to earn a 5-2 victory over Plymouth State University in an ECAC Northeast Conference hockey game at Walter Brown Arena.
The win keeps the Rams in good position for a Northeast Conference playoff bid as they get back to the .500 mark at 9-9-1 overall and 6-6-1 in league play, while PSU drops to 7-12-0 overall and 3-9-0 in the Northeast.
After a scoreless first period, Plymouth State went ahead 2-1 in the second period. Sophomore Dennis Kane (Westford, Mass.) opened the scoring with a power play goal a minute, 20 seconds into the period, his team-leading 13th goal of the season. Corcoran tied it for the Rams at the 9.29 mark, but sophomore Paul Feeney (Lowell, Mass.) scored three minutes later to give PSU its lead back, which lasted through the end of the second period.
It was all Rams in the final 20 minutes. Junior Kevin Coakley (Duxbury, Mass.) and sophomore Marc Lanzilli (East Boston, Mass.) scored in the first four minutes to give Suffolk the lead, and Corcoran and freshman Kevin Fortin (St. Bruno, Que.) added insurance goals to seal the win for the Rams.
Suffolk finished with a 43-37 advantage in shorts on goal. PSU freshman Trevor Cherry (Greenland, N.H.) finished with 38 saves, including 16 in the third period, while Suffolk sophomore Greg Blais (Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.) earned the win with a 35-save effort.
Plymouth State looks to get back on track Saturday at Fitchburg State (7:00 p.m.), while Suffolk hosts Lebanon Valley Saturday at 5:45 p.m.
