PSU Ice Hockey downs Worcester State
WORCESTER, Mass. - Junior Kyle Poirier (Concord, N.H.) scored two goals and an assist and freshman Mykul Haun (Alameda, Cal.) added a goal and two assists Saturday night to help Plymouth State University capture a 6-2 victory over Worcester State College in an ECAC Northeast Conference hockey game.
The victory helped the Panthers stop a five-game losing streak and improve their overall record to 8-15-0 and their conference mark to 4-11-0, while Worcester State drops to 4-19-0 and 3-13-0. The eight wins for PSU this year is the most in a season since the 1998-99 Panthers finished 13-12-0.
Sophomore goalie Trevor Cherry (Greenland, N.H.) earned the victory in the Panther net, making 30 saves to up his record to 4-6-0.
Poirier and senior Mike Jackson (Middleton, Mass.) scored first-period goals for PSU, sandwiched around Jason Rogato's score for WSC, and the visitors led 1-0 after 20 minutes. Haun and Poirier then scored consecutive goals 22 seconds apart five minutes into the middle period, although Justin Vallas countered for the Lancers 27 seconds later to make it a 4-2 game at 6:12 of the second.
The score remained that way until the last six minutes of the game, when PSU sophomore forward Rory Nickerson (West Chatham, Mass.) and junior defenseman Max Wernert (Greenwich, Conn.) scored insurance goals a minute apart to ice the game.
Plymouth State registered a 34-32 advantage in shots on goal. WSC's Jon Coderre finished with 28 saves.
Plymouth State returns home to play the final game of the season on Tuesday, as Western New England College visits Waterville Valley Ice Arena for an ECAC Northeast match-up (6:00 p.m.).
