Southern Maine holds off PSU Men’s Ice Hockey

- Sophomore Brian Collins (Reading, Mass.) and freshman Mike Stevens (Dover, N.H.) each had a goal and an assist Tuesday night to help the University of Southern Maine pull out a 4-1 victory over Plymouth State University in a non-conference men's hockey game at the USM Ice Arena.

The win got the Huskies back to .500 overall with a 2-2-1 record.  Plymouth State dropped its second straight to slip to 2-4-1 overall.

Collins scored what proved to be the game winner when he lit the lamp at 9:04 of the second period while the Huskies enjoyed a 5-on-3 power play.  He later assisted on Stevens' power-play goal late in the third period.  Stevens picked up his assist on an empty net goal by senior Erik Kent (Newburyport, Mass.) with 32 seconds left in regulation.

Southern Maine took a 1-0 lead with the only goal of the first period as sophomore Mark Carragher (Charlottetown, PEI) netted his first of the season on the power play.  Juniors Ryan Wright (Eliot, Maine) and James LeBlanc (Dorval, Quebec) drew the assists.

Collins first goal of the season made it 2-0 after 40 minutes.  Plymouth State clawed back within one as freshman Chris Cadieux (Nashua, N.H.) pounded home a rebound at 7:32 of the third period.  It was Cadieux's sixth goal of the season.

Stevens scored at 17:09 to give the Huskies some breathing room, and Kent clinched the game with his empty netter.

Freshman goalie Karl Helgesson (Lerum, Sweden) played very well for the Panthers stopping 37 of 40 shots he faced.  Rookie netminder Ryan Sullivan (Newton, Mass.) made 26 saves for the Huskies.

Southern Maine will entertain Williams College on Friday while Plymouth State hosts Salve Regina University on Saturday (6:00 p.m.).
