PSU Men’s Hockey opens 2005 with win over Stonehill

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. - Freshman Ryan Moreau (Worcester, Mass.) netted a goal and an assist while fellow freshman Karl Helgesson (Lerum, Sweden) made 20 saves in goal Thursday evening to lift Plymouth State University to a 4-2 ECAC Northeast ice hockey victory over Stonehill College at the Bridgewater Ice Arena.

The outcome starts 2005 for the Panthers the same way they ended 2004, with a victory.  PSU improves to 4-5-2 overall and 2-1-1 in the Northeast, while Stonehill dips to 2-8 overall and 0-7 in conference play.

Tallies by Moreau and freshman Deni Bojadzic (Gothenburg, Sweden) staked the visiting Panthers to a 2-0 advantage through 40 minutes of action, and sophomore Derek Avakian's (Edgartown, Mass.) tally 6:29 into the final stanza gave Plymouth State a 3-0 cushion.  The host Chieftains got on the board midway through the third on freshman Anthony Zanetti's (Ludlow, Mass.) power play goal and sliced the deficit to one with just under four minutes remaining on a tally by sophomore Evan Spencer (Billerica, Mass.), but the Panthers iced matters on freshman Goose LaCroix's (Moretown, Vt.) empty-netter with 24 seconds remaining to post the win.

Junior Nick DeBaggis (Topsfield, Mass.) added a pair of assists in the win for Plymouth State, while juniors Paul Feeney (Lowell, Mass.) and Topo LaCroix (Moretown, Vt.), along with sophomore Andy Herlihy (Bow, N.H.) and freshman Chris Cadieux (Nashua, N.H.), netted single helpers for the Panthers.  Senior Dan Muse (Canton, Mass.), juniors Craig Pasquantonio (Randolph, Mass.) and Billy Sylvia (Acushnet, Mass.) as well as freshman Brian Davis (Foxboro, Mass.) collected assists for Stonehill in its setback.

Helgesson made 16 of his 20 stops in the final two periods of action to pick up the win between the pipes for Plymouth State, while junior Billy Petrucci (East Bridgewater, Mass.) made 23 saves in net for Stonehill as the Panthers outshot the Chieftains by a 27-22 margin.

Stonehill hosts Assumption in a non-league outing on Saturday afternoon at the Bridgewater Ice Arena beginning at 5:45 p.m., while Plymouth State heads to Boston on Saturday afternoon to take on Suffolk in a non-league contest that faces off at 4:00 p.m.
