PSU Mens Ice Hockey gets past Framingham State
FRAMINGHAM, Mass. - Freshman goalie Karl Helgesson (Lerum, Sweden) stopped 36 of the 37 shots he faced Tuesday evening to lead the Plymouth State University men's ice hockey team to a 3-1 victory over Framingham State College in ECAC Northeast Conference action.
Helgesson made 15 saves in the opening period and 14 more in the third frame to help PSU register its fourth victory in its last five outings. The freshman netminder lowered his goals against average to 2.81 and improved his saves percentage to .908, both of which are ranked second among the 22 goalies in the ECAC Northeast.
PSU improved to 6-6-2 overall and 3-2-1 in conference play, while the Rams fell to 1-11-1 overall and 0-7-0 in the Northeast.
Freshman Ryan Moreau (Worcester, Mass.) scored the only goal of the first period with just 18 seconds remaining to give the Panthers a 1-0 lead. After a scoreless second period, freshman Deni Bojadzic (Gothenburg, Sweden) gave PSU a two-goal advantage at the 8:08 mark of the third with his eighth of the campaign.
Framingham State cut the margin in half at 11:44 of the third on a goal by sophomore Tim Richard (Leominster, Mass.) but PSU sealed the victory with an empty-net goal by senior Max Wernert (Greenwich, Conn.) with 1:45 remaining.
The hosts finished with a 37-30 advantage in shots on goal. Senior Paul Morgan (Natick, Mass.) finished with 27 saves for the Rams.
The Panthers play their fifth road game in six contests this Saturday with a visit to Wentworth to face the conference co-leaders (7:00 p.m.). Framingham State plays again Saturday at Worcester State (6:30 p.m.)
