BOSTON, Mass. - Freshman forward Aidan Penner's (Winnipeg, Man.) goal with 1:54 left in the first period stood as the game's lone tally and senior Bryce McFadden (Saanichton, B.C.) turned aside all 29 shots he faced - including one shortly before the final buzzer sounded - as Wentworth defeated Plymouth State, 1-0, in an ECAC Northeast contest at Matthews Arena.
PSU freshman goalie sensation Karl Helgesson (Lerum, Sweden) continued his stellar play. He made a season-high 43 saves on 44 shots, including several key stops to keep PSU in the game the whole night.
The Leopards, who are tied for first place in the ECAC Northeast with Curry College, improve to 11-6-1 overall and 8-0-1 in conference play. PSU is now 6-7-2 overall and 3-3-1 in the Northeast.
Penner's shot came off a rebound of a sophomore forward Adam Ysasi (Phoeniz, Ariz.) shot. Wentworth outshot the Panthers 21-6 in the first stanza, but Helgesson made several huge saves.
The second period saw each team pepper the opposing goalie with 12 shots, but none would get past either netminder. Plymouth State had two chances on a two-on-zero breakaway, but McFadden stuffed the initial shot and the rebound.
Both teams would have their chances to score in the third, but goaltending was the key to this game. Plymouth State pulled Helgesson with 54 seconds and would call time out with 35 seconds left and a face-off just inside the Leopard zone. Wentworth could not clear the puck and the Panthers put two shots on net, including one in the waning second of the contest.
Helgesson improved his league-leading saves percentage to .918.
PSU travels to Curry on Tuesday to face the other co-leader in the Northeast (7:35 p.m.), the Panthers' sixth road game in the last seven outings. Wentworth hosts RIT Sunday at 2:00 p.m.
