Castleton State nips Plymouth State in mens ice hockey
CASTLETON, Vt. - Castleton State College got goals from freshman Ross Carmichael (Jacobstown, N.J.) and junior Joe Huchko (Congers, N.Y.) Tuesday evening and the Spartans skated past Plymouth State University, 2-1, in a men's non-conference hockey game.
The Panthers got another outstanding performance from sophomore goalie Karl Helgesson (Lerum, Sweden) to keep them in the game. Castleton State, 1-1-1, had a 36-15 advantage in shots on goal, but Helgesson stopped 34 pucks, including all 15 he faced in the third period.
Carmichael scored the only goal of the first period at the 7:11 mark to give the Spartans the lead, and Huchko made it 2-0 with two minutes to go in the second period. Senior Dennis Kane (Westford, Mass.) put PSU on the board with 2:20 to play in the third period, with junior Jay Londer (Philadelphia, Pa.) and sophomore Chris Cadieux (Nashua, N.H.) assisting, but the Panthers could not get the tying goal.
PSU, 2-2 overall, is back in action this Saturday and Sunday (Nov. 27-27) at the PAL Stovepipe Tournament in Manchester, N.H. This year's tournament is at Saint Anselm College, and Plymouth State will face the hosts in Saturday's second game (4:00 p.m.), following the Southern New Hampshire-Brockport State contest (1:00 p.m.). The consolation game is Sunday at 1:00 pm., followed by the championship game at 4:00 p.m.
