PLYMOUTH, N.H. - For the third straight week, the starting goalie on the Plymouth State University men's ice hockey team has been recognized by the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) for his efforts in PSU's games last week.
Sophomore goalie Karl Helgesson (Lerum, Sweden) was named ECAC Northeast Conference Goaltender of the Week on Wednesday. He received the same honor two weeks ago, and last week was named to the ECAC Northeast Weekly Honor Roll.
A 6'2", 170-pound goalie, Helgesson was named Tournament Most
Outstanding Player and All-Tournament Goalie last weekend, leading
Plymouth State to the championship of the PAL Stovepipe Tournament
in Manchester, N.H. Helgesson finished the week with a 1-1-1
record, a 2.89 goals against average and a .925 saves percentage.
He made 34 saves in a 2-1 loss as Castleton State last Tuesday,
made 47 saves in a 5-4 overtime win over Saint Anselm in the PAL
Cup semifinals, and he made 30 saves in the 3-3 tie with Brockport
State in the championship game before stopping all four shots he
faced in the shootout, leading PSU to the tournament title.
A Second Team All-Conference goalie last season, Helgesson ranks third among the 20 goalies in the Northeast this season in both goals against average (2.75) and saves percentage (.933).
The Panthers, 3-2-1 overall and 2-0 in the Northeast, return to conference play this Saturday, Dec. 3, at Salve Regina (6:30 p.m.)
