PORTSMOUTH, R.I. - Senior Dennis Kane (Westford, Mass.) scored two goals Saturday night as Plymouth State University's men's ice hockey team remained unbeaten in ECAC Northeast Conference action with a 4-1 victory over Salve Regina University at Portsmouth Abbey.
PSU did not travel over three hours for another tie game with Salve, even though four of the previous nine meetings ended in a deadlock after 65 minutes of play. The Panthers made a two-goal first period be all they would need before adding a pair of late third-period goals. Both teams now have three wins in the series.
Kane delivered the game's first goal for PSU four minutes into the 10th all-time meeting. The eventual game-winner for the Panthers came with 10 seconds left in the period, an unassisted goal from junior Jay Londer (Philadelphia, Pa.)
Salve Regina, winless in its last seven games after a 2-0 start, cut the deficit in half on a power-play goal in the second from junior Ryan Doyle (Lowell, Mass.)
That's all the scoring the stingy Panther defense would allow, limiting the Seahawks to just seven shots on goal in the final period. Junior Mykul Haun (Alameda, Cal.) tallied an insurance goal for PSU with just under four minutes remaining, and Kane added an empty-netter in the final minute. Kane leads the Panthers in scoring with six goals and two assists in seven games.
Sophomore Karl Helgesson (Lerum, Sweden) stopped 31 shots between the pipes for the winners while freshman Ryan Comerford (Merrimack, N.H.) made 34 saves for Salve Regina.
PSU, 4-2-1 overall and 3-0-0 in the Northeast, plays a non-conference game Tuesday at New England College (7:00 p.m.). Salve, 2-5-2 overall and 0-2-1 in the Northeast, plays a conference game Tuesday at Suffolk.
